Genesis One – The Creation

Genesis Chronicles as seen by Anna

So it seems Genesis is divided up into fifty chapters. I will go through them one by one.

This first part mostly talks about God setting out to create Earth and all the creatures on it. It doesn’t explain why He does this, so I can only assume He was sitting in the darkness (since He hadn’t invented light yet), got bored, and wanted to create something for entertainment. He had already created all the matter in the universe, including the planets, but they were sitting there dormant in the void of space, consisting only of dust, rock, and water. You can’t really have fun with all that matter if you can’t see it, so He fixed that problem.

In the famous phrase “Let there be light,” God created light. He thought it was pretty cool, but I guess He missed the darkness, so He separated light from dark to have both, giving us day and night.

Day One: To me, day one was the most boring day of creation. All He did was separate the water below from the water above, which essentially means He created a protective, breathable atmosphere (the sky) above the water-covered planet.

Day Two:  This was a very productive day for God. On this day, He moved the waters around so that dry land was exposed, giving us both land and sea. It seems to me that He created a single continent, with all the waters surrounding it, which aligns with the Pangaea Theory. Once satisfied with that, He created vegetation, including plants that produced seeds and fruit to ensure they could continue to grow and spread.

Day Three:  Not satisfied with light and dark just flickering on and off willy-nilly, He created the sun and moon to govern the days, months, and years. He then sprinkled in some stars to light up the night and provide a way for us to track the passage of time. Considering there are more stars in the sky than grains of sand on Earth, this was no small feat. One could possibly assume He had created them long before, and they were just cold rocks floating about, and now, with light to work with, He made them ignite with a simple wave of His hand.

Day Four: Here He poofed into creation all the sea creatures and birds and ordered them to “be fruitful and multiply.”

Day Five: On this day He brought forth all the land animals.  Unlike all the sea creatures and birds, He does not tell them to go forth an multiply, which is odd. Obviously they do, but why didn’t He give his blessing for the poor cows and lizards to get it on?

Side note: No idea why AI gave the lizard 3 legs.

Day Six: Woohoo! It’s our turn—humans were created. However, something interesting here: it says, “Let US make humankind in OUR image.” Note the plural form there. It implies that there were multiple gods, not just one, that we were designed to resemble. This is also supported by the fact that the name for “God” in Hebrew, as we English-speaking folks know Him, is “Elohim,” which, depending on how it’s used, can mean “gods” (plural). So, it stands to reason that there is more than one “god,” and possibly, when used in the singular form, it could refer to the ruler or leader of these “gods.” Time will tell.

Side note: AI wouldn’t allow me to create images with fig leaves for outfits, so this is the closest I could get. Also, AI thinks Adam and Eve were hot AF. Adam might want to check on that left ab, it seems to be deflating at the top.

But anyway, He (or they) made us and gave us dominion over vegetation and all living creatures. He told us that the vegetation was for us and all the other living creatures to eat. However, He doesn’t mention anything about it being okay for us to eat other living creatures or for any animal to eat another, for that matter. He specifically says that all animals that breathe life were made to eat vegetation. I don’t know how important that is, but it seems we all started off as vegetarians. I’m not sure if we later tasted blood and decided to eat other living creatures, did it out of necessity when the crops weren’t good, or if it was eventually ordered by God as a way to maintain population control among all the creatures on Earth. We’ll see if it’s addressed later on. If not, then that’s definitely a question to explore further.

And, of course, He told humans to “be fruitful and multiply,” which we seem to have no problem with. But He still provides no permission for the other land animals to do so. So far, only birds, sea creatures, and humans are given the blessing to reproduce. Probably not important, but interesting.

Lastly, in this section, before the day ends, He gloats a bit about how He gave us and all the vegetation to eat. For that, I do thank Him—especially for wine grapes.
